KARUN THE MARE
The mare Karun (Kārūn) of Amanollah Khan Dareshuri is one of the most well known horses in the country. Even though she passed away in 2018, she is to this day one of the great pillars of the Dareshuri horse. Several great stallions and mares were born to her, and even at her final age of around 41 years, she still had the zest and energy of a young mare looking for a mate.
Karun is known as a legendary horse, influencing almost all pureblood Dareshuri horses today and many other mixed blood Dareshuri with her traits and lineage.
She was named after the Karun river, the only navigable river of modern day Iran, stretching almost 1000 km down to the Persian Gulf from atop the Zagros Mountains. This mountain range is both the birthplace of the Karun river, and the birthplace and home of the Dareshuri breed of horses, amongst them Karun the mare. Her blood runs in the veins of almost all purebloods today one way or another, prompting many to praise her phenotype and strong Dareshuri features and conformation.
She was born in the foothills of the Zagros Mountains in south western Iran to the famous Karoon (her dame) and was sired by Rostam, both of which were pureblood Dareshuri horses as identified by the famous Daghe Do (Brand Two) branding.
Shahpar is a tall mare by Dareshuri horse standards and her foals usually grow to become even taller than her. Her most visible behavioral characteristic is the way she protects and cares for her own foals, and even her herd.
In the documentary “Daghe Do” (or Brand Two), Amanollah Khan describes the Dareshuri horse phenotype by using Shahpar as his subject. You can watch the video below (12:31):
