SHAHPAR

Shahpar is a very alpha yet calm mare and leader of the herd. Amanollah Khan Dareshuri says the first base mare that his grandfather had given to his father (Ziad Khan) and was called the “Yellow Mare” very much resembled Shahpar.

The word shahpar means the primary or secondary quill feather of the wing of a bird (Merriam-Webster), which is usually the longest of the feathers of a bird’s wing. It also depicts the ability to fly well and is given to large birds of prey, sometimes dragons in folklore. And indeed how Shahpar takes to magnificent flight when she decides the grazing period is over for the day and the herd must return to its stables from the field is a sight to experience.

She was born in the foothills of the Zagros Mountains in south western Iran to the famous Karoon (her dame) and was sired by Rostam, both of which were pureblood Dareshuri horses as identified by the famous Daghe Do (Brand Two) branding.

Shahpar is a tall mare by Dareshuri horse standards and her foals usually grow to become even taller than her. Her most visible behavioral characteristic is the way she protects and cares for her own foals, and even her herd.

In the documentary “Daghe Do” (or Brand Two), Amanollah Khan describes the Dareshuri horse phenotype by using Shahpar as his subject. You can watch the video below (12:31):
